Negative Side Effects of Resveratrol
There have been little to no negative side effects of resveratrol reported during the early stages of this supplement’s growth in the marketplace. However, it is very important to realize that natural supplements are not the same as the synthetic versions of Resveratrol that will hit the market in a few years.
Companies like Sirtris, the biochemical startup, have goals of producing very powerful prescription type versions of the supplement in order to make it stronger and to produce it faster. Once that happens, the negative side effects could increase dramatically.
Although there have been few human clinical trials thus far, one using untreated diabetes patients did show impressive results with no major side effects.
There has been some discussion about the similarity between the structure of Resveratrol and a specific synthetic estrogen. Some believe that resveratrol could eventually produce effects similar to estrogen but that this could also have a negative impact on the growth of breast cancer cells.
There are still many future tests and human trials that will be conducted on this compound. At the moment, it appears that the natural supplements (which are often crushed grape skins) are fairly safe, and Dr. Oz from the Oprah show stated that he takes them regularly.
As with any new health product on the market, there is always some risk involved, but the potential benefits seem to outweigh any current consumer concerns about the negative side effects of resveratrol.
